Sri Lanka They have opened an operational base in the south, and in co-operation with the local water board they are cleaning public water pipes in three towns (Dikwella, Walligama and Denindondra). They have provided wheelbarrows, shovels, and other tools, and paid for the labour supplied by a local NGO. Indonesia Oxfam is building latrines and delivering water to 10,000 people in Banda Aceh and continues to work on scaling-up delivery to reach many more. India The number of people returning home from relief camps is rising, although many survivors have nowhere to return to and are staying in the camps until they receive compensation from the government. Andaman and Nicobar Islands Oxfam has a staff member on the islands and they have supported the provision of essential items to seven camps, including mosquito nets for babies, household and personal items, lanterns, and water containers. Maldives The Oxfam flight carrying bottled water arrives 7th January. Their team is making arrangements to get the equipment up and running rapidly. 15,000 people are displaced, and 30,000 in total in need of clean, fresh drinking water. Somalia Oxfam in the Netherlands (Novib) has local partner organisations in Somalia. They report that there was severe tsunami damage. In Hafuun, 60 per cent of houses were destroyed and all livelihoods lost. In several other places water sources collapsed. Novib will assist partners providing shelter, water, food, utensils, sanitation, health care and other items, and will also look at rebuilding the local fishing industry. |
